Mum’s that rock – Dr Khaleeda Siraj – London

Meet my wonderful friend Dr Khaleeda Siraj
General practitioner and Mother of 2.
What is the best advice you have been given on parenting?
If a child asks you something and you think ‘no’ don’t say no immediately. Discuss it with them and ask reasons about why they want to do it. Explore their thoughts and feelings. That way in the long term you’ll be closer to them and they will feel closer to you.Obviously it’s easier with older children rather than a screaming toddler!
What are your kids’ favourite foods?
My son loves spaghetti Bolognese.
If he could he would eat it everyday!
My daughter loves curry. My mother stayed with us for 5 months when she was 14 months and cooked mild curry everyday for her.
What is your favourite meal to cook for the family?
Roast chicken with olives, rice, sweetcorn. It’s the easiest meal by far. No chopping required.
What are the kids’ favourite toys?
A giant green frog which was a gift. It’s bigger than my 3 year old daughter. I have been trying to give it away for years but my children spot it if it goes missing.
What three items do you always have in your bag when out with your kids?
One word to describe labour?
What have you found to be the hardest part of your motherhood journey?
Balancing work and being available not only physically but also psychologically for my children. Women’s role within the workplace and within the home as a mother is still completely underestimated in society.
What is the best part of motherhood?
The feeling of joy seeing the fruits of your nurturing. The feelings I think people don’t talk about.
